Collecting Memories

Australian Heritage Week

The inaugural Australian Heritage Week ran from 14-20 April 2011. It was an opportunity for all Australians to join together to celebrate our shared and special heritage. The Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority coordinated a very special opportunity to get involved.

Collecting Memories

Collecting Memories events were held at each Tasmania’s six convict sites that form part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage property – Port Arthur, Cascades Female Factory, Darlington Probation Station, Woolmers Estate and Brickendon Estate.

During the week, many many people visited Port Arthur and the other Tasmanian World Heritage Convict Sites to celebrate Australian Heritage Week and share their stories of their connections to those sites.

We were able to record details about their recollections or artefacts; every contribution has helped to increase our knowledge and understanding of our history and of the important place these sites hold in the hearts and minds of our community members.

We subsequently gathered the stories and information received and produced a booklet showcasing some of the stories that have come to light.

This event is to celebrate our community connections to these significant places. This project was funded through the National Heritage List Sites Promotional Program of the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities.
